Terms of Service

Plain language. No legalese walls. These are the rules that keep Closur a safe space for honest expression.

Effective: April 16, 2026 ยท Last updated: April 16, 2026

Closur is available to anyone 18 years of age or older. By creating an account, you confirm that you meet this age requirement.

This age requirement exists because Closur deals with complex emotional content including grief, loss, and relationship trauma. We believe users should have the emotional maturity and legal capacity to engage with this content responsibly.

Note: Users under 18 are not permitted to use Closur. If we discover an account belonging to a user under 18, we will terminate it immediately and delete all associated data.

Closur is built on the principle of protective anonymity โ€” the freedom to express yourself without exposing yourself or others.

  • โ—†You may not include real full names of identifiable individuals in your letters.
  • โ—†Address your letters by relationship only โ€” "To my ex," "To my father," "To my best friend" โ€” never by real name.
  • โ—†You may not post content that could be used to identify, locate, or contact a specific private individual (doxxing).
  • โ—†Your anonymous username must not be your real name or contain personally identifying information.
  • โ—†Do not share your own or others' phone numbers, addresses, workplaces, or other identifying details in letters.

Impersonation Prohibition:

You may not impersonate any living person without their explicit written consent. When replying to letters, you are offering surrogate closure as a compassionate stranger โ€” not claiming to be the actual person the letter was written to. Replies that falsely claim to be from a specific living individual will be removed and may result in account termination.

Anonymity is a gift we give each other. Use it with care.

The following content is strictly prohibited on Closur and will result in immediate removal and possible account termination:

Harassment & Bullying

Content designed to intimidate, demean, or repeatedly target a specific person.

Hate Speech

Content that attacks individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin.

Threats & Violence

Direct or implied threats of physical harm, or content that glorifies or incites violence.

Explicit Sexual Content

Pornographic material, sexual content involving minors, or non-consensual sexual content of any kind.

Self-Harm Encouragement

Content that promotes, glorifies, or provides instructions for self-harm or suicide. (Sharing personal struggles is allowed โ€” encouraging harm is not.)

Spam & Manipulation

Repetitive posts, coordinated inauthentic behavior, or attempts to game the platform.

Illegal Content

Content that violates applicable laws, including copyright infringement, fraud, or distribution of illegal material.

Cruel or Mocking Replies

Replies that retraumatize, mock, belittle, or cause additional harm to letter writers. Replies must be compassionate and offered in good faith.

Your words belong to you. You retain full ownership of all letters, replies, and content you create on Closur.

By posting content on Closur, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to display, distribute, and reproduce your content solely for the purpose of operating and improving the platform. This includes:

  • โ—†Displaying your letters in the feed and on your profile
  • โ—†Generating shareable image previews of your letters
  • โ—†Indexing your content for search within the platform
  • โ—†Creating anonymized aggregate statistics about platform usage

We will never sell your letters to third parties or use them for advertising targeting without your explicit consent.

You can delete your letters at any time. Upon deletion, your content is removed from public view immediately and purged from our systems within 30 days.

Closur takes a good faith approach to content moderation. We actively work to maintain a safe, healing space while respecting freedom of expression.

Our moderation approach:

  • โ—†Community members can report content using the flag icon on any letter or reply.
  • โ—†Reported content is reviewed by our moderation team within 48 hours.
  • โ—†We use automated detection systems to flag potentially harmful content for human review.
  • โ—†Content found to violate our guidelines is removed without prior notice.
  • โ—†We may issue warnings, temporary suspensions, or permanent bans depending on severity.
  • โ—†We do not moderate the emotional content of letters โ€” only violations of these Terms.
  • โ—†Crisis language is detected and met with mental health resources, not removal.

Section 230 & Platform Liability:

Closur is a platform for user-generated content. Under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, we are not liable for content posted by users. However, we take our duty of care seriously and actively moderate to maintain community safety. We respond promptly to valid legal requests and work in good faith to remove illegal content.

Appeals: If you believe your content was removed in error, contact us at support@closur.app within 14 days of removal.

Closur respects intellectual property rights. If you believe content on Closur infringes your copyright, you may submit a DMCA takedown notice.

DMCA Takedown Requests

To file a valid DMCA notice, send an email to dmca@closur.app with:

  • โ—†Your physical or electronic signature
  • โ—†Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed
  • โ—†Identification of the infringing material and its location on Closur
  • โ—†Your contact information (address, phone, email)
  • โ—†A statement that you have a good faith belief the use is not authorized
  • โ—†A statement that the information is accurate and you are authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner

Upon receiving a valid DMCA notice, we will remove or disable access to the allegedly infringing content and notify the user who posted it. Repeat infringers will have their accounts terminated.

Counter-Notices

If you believe your content was removed in error, you may file a DMCA counter-notice at the same email address. We will restore the content within 10-14 business days unless the copyright owner files a court action.

Replies on Closur are sacred. When you reply to someone's letter, you are offering surrogate closure โ€” stepping into the role of the person they couldn't reach, with compassion and intention.

What Makes a Good Reply

  • โ—†Written with genuine empathy and care
  • โ—†Offers validation, understanding, or perspective
  • โ—†Honors the emotional weight of the letter
  • โ—†Helps the writer feel heard and seen
  • โ—†Avoids judgment, mockery, or cruelty

Prohibited Reply Behavior

  • โ—†Replies that retraumatize, mock, or belittle the letter writer
  • โ—†Replies that claim to be from a specific living person without consent
  • โ—†Replies that encourage self-harm or harmful behavior
  • โ—†Replies that harass, threaten, or demean
  • โ—†Replies that are spam, off-topic, or inauthentic

Remember: Your reply may be the only closure this person ever receives. Treat it with the weight it deserves.

You may delete your account at any time through the Settings page. Upon deletion, all your letters, reactions, and personal data will be permanently removed within 30 days.

We may suspend or terminate your account if you:

  • โ—†Repeatedly violate these Terms or Community Guidelines
  • โ—†Engage in harassment, doxxing, or coordinated abuse
  • โ—†Attempt to circumvent moderation or create multiple accounts after a ban
  • โ—†Use the platform for illegal activities

Upon termination by us, your public letters may be removed immediately. You will receive an email notification explaining the reason for termination where possible.

Closur is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that the platform will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful content.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • โ—†We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of Closur.
  • โ—†We are not responsible for user-generated content. Users are solely responsible for their own posts and replies.
  • โ—†We do not provide mental health services, therapy, or medical advice. Closur is a peer support platform, not a substitute for professional care.
  • โ—†We are not liable for any loss of data, though we take reasonable precautions to protect your information.
  • โ—†Our total liability to you for any claims arising from your use of Closur shall not exceed $100 USD or the amount you paid us in the past 12 months, whichever is greater.

Our Duty of Care

While we limit legal liability, we take our responsibility to users seriously. We commit to:

  • โ—†Actively moderating content in good faith to maintain community safety
  • โ—†Detecting and responding to crisis language with mental health resources
  • โ—†Removing harmful content promptly when reported
  • โ—†Protecting user anonymity and privacy
  • โ—†Operating the platform with integrity and care for our community
